Guts Blackpowder Sapper Build Guide

Defensive loadouts, barricade tactics, and Francs upgrade paths for the Sapper engineer class.

The Sapper is Guts & Blackpowder's defensive architect. Armed with an Axe for high-damage melee and a Hammer for constructing Barricades and Stakes, Sappers convert chaotic zombie rushes into manageable kill corridors. Every serious campaign lobby needs at least one engineer for church holdouts, cemetery bells, and capstan defense segments. This guide covers shop upgrades, Francs costs, barricade placement doctrine, and how Sappers synergize with Infantry DPS and Endless mode rosters.

Default Sapper Kit (Free)

Your Axe swings slowly at 1.7 seconds but delivers eighty-five damage with a five-times headshot multiplier ?among the highest burst melee in the game. Brace blocks incoming hits; Shove stunlocks Shamblers, Runners, Sapper Zombies, and Igniters at the cost of brief movement slowdown. Raise your Axe preemptively whenever you are not building ?the windup punishes reactive play against Runners.

The Hammer constructs defensive structures teammates can shoot over. Other Sappers heal damaged buildings. Only the Fife instrument buffs Hammer construction speed, making Musician pairing valuable on long Endless runs.

Shop Upgrades and Francs Costs

Pickaxe ?300 Francs

Trades Axe cleave for hundred-damage precision hits with six-times headshot multiplier and slightly faster swings. Excellent with Siege Engineer Armour when you brawl at the front. Also destroys London vat house targets in one hit and breaks Westminster furniture faster than the Axe. Choose Pickaxe for objective-focused aggressive engineers; keep the free Axe for horde sweeping.

Siege Engineer Armour ?75 Francs

The best Francs-to-power ratio in the shop. Equipping it transforms Sapper into the Engineer subclass with sixty-six percent physical damage resistance and fifty percent explosive resistance. You move nine percent slower, repair twenty-five percent less per hammer swing, and burn faster from Igniter flames ?but you survive Bomber detonations that instantly kill standard Infantry. Lost on death, so play slightly safer after respawn until you re-equip.

Shared Utilities

Recommended Purchase Order

  1. Siege Engineer Armour (75) ?immediate survivability
  2. Water Bucket (50) ?structure and team protection
  3. Grenades (250) ?breach insurance
  4. Pickaxe (300) ?optional for melee-focused Engineers

A functional defensive Sapper needs only 375 Francs for Armour, bucket, and grenades. Compare that to seven-hundred-Franc Infantry primaries ?engineering support is budget-friendly and lobby-critical.

Barricade Placement Tips

Build with team movement in mind, not vanity fortresses. Effective Sapper play follows these principles:

Funnel, Do Not Wall Off

Create chokepoints teammates can shoot into from elevated positions or doorframes. A U-shaped barricade around a church entrance ?like the Leipzig cemetery holdout ?lets riflemen focus fire while zombies path predictably. Fully sealing an area traps allies and blocks retreat routes.

Bomber Spacing

Bombers are a Sapper's worst nightmare. One explosion can delete an over-stacked barricade cluster. Separate structures into two or three segments with gaps wide enough for kiting. If a Bomber detonates segment one, segments two and three still hold. Infantry behind the line should prioritize Bombers before they reach wood.

Backline Fallback

Build a secondary line ten to fifteen studs behind your front barricade. When the first line crumbles during intense waves, survivors fall back without exposing Surgeons and Musicians. Chaplains need safe space to channel Blessings during infection outbreaks.

Deconstruct and Advance

Objective maps move forward. Barricades do not despawn automatically ?they occupy your ten-structure personal cap and the map's thirty-structure global cap. Tear down obsolete fortifications during quiet moments between San Sebastian courtyard fights or after Leipzig cart sections. Carry materials forward to the next holdout instead of leaving walls behind.

No-Build Zones

Memorize areas where the Hammer refuses placement ?certain basements and scripted corridors block construction. Do not waste precious holdout seconds hunting illegal build spots. Ask veterans or consult map walkthroughs before committing structures.

Musician Synergy

Station a Fife player near active builders. Twenty percent reload buff helps Infantry, but Fife specifically accelerates Hammer placement ?critical when rebuilding after wave breaks in Endless. Drums and Bugles buff Axe swing speed instead, useful for melee Engineers.

Sapper on Campaign Maps

Vardøhus Fortress church bell holdouts reward layered stakes before Zappers arrive. Leipzig's cemetery two-story building needs barricades on stairwells while Jacob approaches. San Sebastian capstan segments are less build-heavy but final beach holds benefit from last-minute stakes near the rowboat. London sewer climbs need minimal construction ?save build charges for Westminster if you continue the campaign chain.

On multi-Sapper teams, divide sectors. One engineer fortifies the left approach, another the right, a third maintains and repairs the center. Coordination beats three players stacking barricades in one doorway.

Sapper in Endless Mode

Build at wave start and immediately after each wave clears. Rebuild lost ground before the next spawn timer expires. Two Sappers alternating construction and repair sustain past wave fourteen when Zappers test your lines. Pair with the full roster advice in our Endless team build guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many barricades can a Sapper build in Guts & Blackpowder?

Each Sapper places up to ten structures at a time, with thirty total allowed per map. Deconstruct old barricades as your team advances so you do not hit the cap during later holdouts.

Should Sappers buy Pickaxe or keep the Axe?

The free Axe has better crowd cleave with five-times headshot multiplier. Pickaxe at 300 Francs deals more single-target damage and destroys objectives like London vats faster ?pick it for aggressive Engineer builds.

Is Siege Engineer Armour worth 75 Francs?

Absolutely for frontline Sappers. Sixty-six percent physical resistance and fifty percent explosive resistance let you melee safely, though fire damage increases and repair speed drops twenty-five percent.

How do Sappers counter Bombers?

Space barricades in segments so one explosion does not chain-destroy your entire line. Keep gaps for teammates to kite Bombers into open kill zones. Never stack all stakes in one cluster.
